As we're all too aware, Europe has closed its doors to Americans during the current health crisis. Well, not all of Europe—although Croatia is a member of the European Union, it is now welcoming American travelers with advance hotel reservations who can furnish a negative COVID-19 test result. Croatia was already on our bucket list; this just moved it up to the top.

Speaking of reservations, one of the country's top spots is making it clear they'll be rolling out the red carpet: the five-star Kempinski Hotel Adriatic Istria resort. Founded in 1897, Kempinski is Europe's oldest luxury hotel group, but the design of the Istria property is cutting-edge, combining modern architecture with a historic setting on the Adriatic Sea, which is part of the Mediterranean.

“We are welcoming American guests with open arms," the resort's General Manager, Kai Behrens, tells us, "and are ready to showcase the pristine nature of Istria, as well as the unique activities, gastronomy, and our beautiful hotel on the shores of the Adriatic Sea.” The property features a private beach club, two swimming pools, indoor and outdoor dining, a 30,000-sq.-ft. spa, and an 18-hole golf course.

Nearby you'll find picturesque villages and yacht marinas, olive groves, and vineyards, as well as the Motovun Forest, known for its massive truffles—some of which are bound to find their way to your plate. Kempinski is known for its famous White Glove service, which assures one's every need will be seen to (more truffles, sir?).

The resort is now gearing up for autumn, with a focus on "individually tailored and more private events" designed to soothe anxious travelers and transport them to full relaxation mode upon arrival. Part of the welcoming committee: the hotel's new Executive Chef Dragoljub Paunovic, who stands ready to "present many surprises featuring the jewels of Istrian gastronomy," from fresh Adriatic fish and seafood to those famous truffles and everything in between.

And you'll definitely want to check out the beach club, with its VIP cabanas, beach bar and seaside terrace.

The Kempinski Hotel Adriatic Istria may well be the only resort where Americans can have a truly stylish and luxurious European vacation on the Mediterranean this season. So you know where to find us.
