I try as much as possible these days to streamline my possessions, keeping to well-designed, fairly-priced and practical essentials that will serve me well for years to come – helping me to look my best and make the most out of life's opportunities while deftly handling its exigencies. Here are the key pieces I added to my repertoire this year:

Buck Mason Felted Chore Coat, $195

It can be a "chore" to wear anything that isn't as handsome, comfortable and softly constructed as this cardigan-blazer hybrid in perfectly weighted wool felt.

Blue Blue Japan Slim-Fit Unstructured Indigo-Dyed Linen-Twill Blazer, $325

When it's too hot to wear wool I switch to this beautifully tailored yet totally unlined and soft-wearing blazer which has a slightly worn-in look.

SeaVees Legends Pig Suede Sneakers, $72

The key to the ideal suede sneaker is to perfectly strike a balance between sporty and sartorial. SeaVees' sleek silhouette hits the mark in a soft grey color.

Northern Hospitality Book, $19

I buy and receive books by the dozens and there were lots to choose from in 2018 but this celebration of cocktails, cooking and getting together with friends, from Maine by way of Scandinavia, tops the list.

Nezumi Studios Corbeau Chronograph Watch, $340

I've worn a Rolex every day for several years, but when traveling to certain destinations or for more rugged occasions I have adopted this retro-cool chrono on a NATO strap.

Malin+Goetz Rum Body Wash, $36

I first came across this product in a bathroom of a well-designed hotel and soon purchased some to keep at home. The scent is subtle, the ingredients are respectable and the packaging is perfect.

Timberland World Hiker Mid Boots, $110

I've been wanting a pair of hiking boots for a while, but as I have no plans to scale Everest I didn't want them too clunky. I've also wanted dark green suede boots and Timberland delivered the perfect version.

Helly Hansen Salt Power Jacket, $325

When you really need to keep dry, the Norway-based company that's been outfitting seafaring men since 1877 can't be beat. This is high-tech gear that's more nautical cool than geek chic.

Laphroaig 28-Year-Old Single Malt, $605

One bottle of really good Scotch, sipped slowly by the fire with a Golden retriever at my feet, will see me through most of the winter. This is really, really good Scotch, from my favorite distillery on Islay.

Filson Leather-Trimmed Duffle Bag, $395

Legendary outdoor outfitter Filson has done some subtle updates of its mission-critical cases, built to last a lifetime and help you stay handsome while getting the job done.
