If you've ever watched a spy movie, you've seen the action hero do things like pick a lock with a hairpin, smash through a door by just putting their shoulder into it, and narrowly escape death by jumping through a glass window to make a wild escape. But how accurate is all that stuff? If you were even in a jam like that, could you survive? Would it be the smart move? The guys over at Evander have all your answers below.
IS IT POSSIBLE TO SHOOT YOUR WAY THROUGH A LOCKED DOOR?
"Locked door? No problem. Unloading a few rounds at the lock will surely free up that door to tackle the baddies on the other side! At least that’s what Hollywood would have you believe.
The reality is that only a high powered rifle from close range will be able to bust through that door, making you the true hero you are. However, even with a rifle handy, the shrapnel from the lock and bullet would most likely turn you into Swiss cheese."
CAN YOU OPEN A DOOR WITH A CREDIT CARD?
"Although this method has never worked on deadbolts, previous examples in film and TV would have been true with early spring bolts. Nowadays on modern doors it’s simply not possible, and even on the older doors it was more of a stick and wiggle in the lock rather than a slick swipe, sorry Ethan Hunt."
CAN THE AVERAGE HUMAN SMASH THROUGH A DOOR WITH EASE?
"The movies may you believe that ramming your shoulder into a door instantly results in the door obligingly opening, allowing you to heroically save a wide array of damsels in distress. The reality is that, short of dislocating your shoulder, this method won’t give you the desired effect.
The only real technique would be with a swift kick, on the lock not the middle, of the door. So, keep persevering at the gym to unlock your hero status or just shout "open sesame" until the door magically opens. Or until someone lets you in, obviously."
CAN YOU PICK A LOCK WITH A HAIRPIN?
"The premise of many Hollywood blockbusters is that a hairpin can get you out of any situation. Looking to break into an office? Hairpin! Escape from handcuffs? Hairpin!
In real life the only way this method could be used would be by snapping the hairpin in half, using half as a torsion wrench and the other half to pick the complex cylinder inside; something we haven’t seen John McClane attempt...yet."
HOW EASY IS IT TO SMASH AND JUMP THROUGH A WINDOW?
"Short answer; extremely difficult and almost impossible to dive through. Modern day double glazing is extremely tough and you might question the kind of medical state James Bond might be in as he dives through his 4th pane of the film. Breaking into homes with double glazing is also extremely difficult, making movie break-ins somewhat ridiculous."
