Ocean's 11 and Out of Sight director Steven Soderbergh has a new basketball movie coming to Netflix from a script by Academy Award winner Tarell Alvin McCraney (Moonlight).
But what makes High Flying Bird really interesting isn't just the pedigree of the behind-the-camera talent or appearances from NBA stars like Karl-Anthony Towns and Donovan Mitchell, but the fact that it's shot entirely on an iPhone 7.
His second feature shot on a mobile device – his 2018 psychological thriller Unsane was also filmed on an iPhone 7 – Soderbergh finds the creative choice liberating and practical but also inspiring, as it shows young filmmakers that they don't need pricey equipment to make beautiful art. And beyond the gimmick, as some might call it, the movie actually looks really, really great.
Check out the trailer above and make sure to catch it when it drops February 8. Soderbergh rarely misses and even bad sports movies have a special quality, so we have high hopes for this one.
