This past weekend the prestigious Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles opened its newest exhibition featuring 10 groundbreaking race cars, each with a unique story of triumph and victory. Titled 'Winning Numbers: The First, The Fastest, The Famous,' the exhibit is comprised of Le Mans winners, land speed record setters, dragsters and road racers from the personal garage of Petersen Founding Chairman Bruce Meyer, one of the world's top car collectors.
Meyer, who spent decades building his collection, only acquires cars of "substantial importance and emotional impact, often without regard for investment potential," though of course some of his icons are worth millions. Here are our five favorites from the new show:
1957 Ferrari 625 250 Testarossa
The 'winningest' Ferrari road racer of all time, this Testa Rossa claimed first prize in more than half of the 50 competitions in which it was raced. Its V-12 engine was a later addition. Meyer purchased the car in 2001.
1961 Ferrari 250GT SWB
This 250GT, one of the most beautiful Ferraris ever built, won at the Coppa InterEuropa at Monza and the 24 Hours of LeMans in 1961 and came in second at Spa Francorchamps the following year, helping to cement Ferrari's reputation for racing success.
1962 Shelby Cobra
Meyer purchased this Cobra, the very first production model, built in 1962 and one of the most significant American sports cars in existence, at Retromobile in Paris in 2006. It was prepped for the 1964 24 Hours of Le Mans and raced throughout Europe by its American owner in 1964-’65.
1965 Bizzarrini Iso Grifo A3C
This Italian rarity styled by a former Ferrari engineer, a prototype powered by a 327 V-8 from a Chevrolet Corvette, competed in the 1965 24 Hours of Le Mans, achieving a class win and a top-10 finish overall. The company went under in 1969.
1979 Porsche 935 K3
This 911 Turbo-based racer which took first place overall at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1979, beating all other prototypes in heavy rain, is one of Meyer's favorite cars. Kremer Racing made more than 100 modifications to the stock model resulting in the car's exotic looks.
