Earlier today, Topps previewed official NFT versions of its 2021 baseball cards, which will run through the WAX blockchain and feature familiar designs in collaboration with Major League Baseball. All the top talent in America's pastime will be featured, from young guns like Fernando Tatis Jr. and Bo Bichette to hallmark stars like Mike Trout.
Set to launch on April 20, the initial drop will feature 50,000 pre-minted standard packs priced at $5 USD apiece and 24,000 pre-minted premium packs priced at $100 USD apiece. And though the cards won't contain highlight clips like its rival NBA Top Shot, it will feature animated backgrounds and "refractor" properties that add depth to the traditional, collector-focused design.
Collectors will also have the opportunity to participate in a “Burn to Earn” event, where you can "burn” (permanently delate) five base cards during a period for a chance to receive a special edition card featuring the classic Topps design from 1952. This is interesting in a lot of ways but most of all, adding incentive to "burn" base cards will keep the overall supply incredibly low.
