PWCC Marketplace has just announced that a LeBron James rookie card sold for a gobsmacking amount: $5.2mm USD. It ties a 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle as the most expensive trading card ever sold, which moved hands in Jan. of this year.
The multimillion-dollar trading card comes from the 2003-04 set of Upper Deck Exquisite Basketball, one of the most iconic and notable in the premium category. It's autographed and numbered to just 23, with Beckett awarding it a 9 in terms of condition. Only three of the 23 cards are graded higher.
Less notable LeBron James rookie cards continue to fetch big numbers, though nothing compared to his Upper Deck Exquisite. His Topps Chrome rookie card — which is widely considered his "flagship" rookie card — can be found on eBay with prices ranging from $3,500 USD in a PSA 8 to $28,000 USD in a PSA 10.
