The Land Rover BAR (Ben Ainslie Racing) team that's aiming to challenge Oracle Team USA (backed by BMW) for the America's Cup in Bermuda next year just pulled ahead of the competition for the first time with a decisive victory in Portsmouth, UK.
With the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge cheering on from a spectator boat over two days of action-packed racing, Land Rover BAR emerged as overall winners, taking the lead over previous champs Emirates Team New Zealand and leaving Cup defenders Oracle in third place with two races to go.
If Land Rover BAR manages to stay on top it will become the official challenger for the Cup in 2017 with the real prospect of returning the iconic trophy to the UK for the very first time since the race began in 1851.
The next races, part of the America's Cup Louis Vuitton World Series, will take place in France in September and Japan in November, followed by the Qualifiers and Challenger Playoffs in Bermuda in May prior to the America's Cup itself.
The Land Rover BAR team, which claims a significant advantage due to technological assistance from Land Rover's engineers, will need to keep winning to have a shot at taking the Cup away from Oracle. So far it looks like they've got a fighting chance.
