The Rip Curl WSL Finals, the biggest day in surfing history, is right around the corner. From Sept. 9 - 17, the ten best surfers from around the world will converge onto one of the highest performance waves in the world: Lower Trestles in San Clemente, CA.

And the stakes couldn’t be higher this year.

In an unprecedented move, the WSL announced a new format, opting for a one-day winner-take-all competition that is sure to create fireworks. Leading into the event, there is a lot to question: will the first Californian champ this century be crowned with Conner Coffin? Will American, gold-medal winning, and four-time world champion, Carissa Moore stake her claim as the best surfer on Earth? Will fellow gold medalist, Italo Ferreira complete the best season competitive surfing has ever seen after coming into the final at the number two spot? Will Tatiana Weston-Webb, ranked at the two-spot for women’s competition become Brazil’s first Women’s World Champion? Will the 21-year-old from Australia, Morgan Cibilic, be the first rookie to win a Men’s World Title? And will the top-ranked, Brazilian Gabriel Medin, clinch his third world title? All these, and many more questions, will be answered very soon.

It’s already been a legendary season this year. The new championship event is a fitting finale to what is sure to be one of the best years of competitive surfing to date.
